StatspackAnalyzer Project Goals
Since the dawn of Oracle database management, Oracle DBA's have struggled to
interpret the plethora of statistics that are provided by the Oracle
time-series performance reports, and the Oracle community has always desired
a software tool that could apply basic decision rules to generic STATSPACK
and AWR reports.
Interpreting an Oracle STATSPACK/AWR report will always be complex and it
would take a massive effort to fully replicate the analysis of a human Oracle
tuning expert.
On the other hand, it is possible to create and quantify basic decision rules
(heuristics) that can be generalized and applied to all STATSPACK and AWR
reports. That was the impetus for the statspackanalyzer expert systems
project.
What is StatspackAnalyzer?
StatspackAnalyzer is a true expert system that seeks to codify expert DBA
knowledge and advice against any STATSPACK or AWR report. The well-structured
decision rules of expert Oracle tuning specialists were collected, quantified
and then generalized and validated against real-world STATSPACK and AWR
reports.
While no automated tool can fully replicate the decision processes of a human
DBA tuning expert, statspackanalyzer makes observations about exceptional
conditions within the STATSPACK or AWR report. The StatspackAnalyzer tool was
never intended to replace the human intuition of an Oracle performance
expert, and all observations from statspackanalyzer should be validated with
a human expert.
